The Music Department at a Glance. The music department is part of the College of Arts and Sciences. Music majors are able to earn a BA degree in Music Education or a BA in Music with concentrations in Composition, Performance, Pre-Teaching or General. The music program is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and many of its graduates have gone on to distinguished and successful careers in education and performance.
Music is for Everyone. There are many opportunities for students, regardless of major, to participate in music ensembles, applied/private lessons and numerous other classes. Many of these classes help fulfill the humanities General Education requirement.
Ensemble classes are open to all students and require either an audition or instructor's permission for enrollment. Generally, students interested in joining an ensemble that requires an instructor's permission are granted it after attending the first day of class. More information can be found in the Music Department Course Description portion of the catalog.
An Accomplished Department. The George Fox Symphonic Band and Concert Choir have recently been recognized by the National Association for Music Educators as superior music ensembles by being selected to perform at two state and regional conventions.
Because of its highly respected and comprehensive music education program, the department was recently acknowledged as one of the best in the nation. Faculty were invited to present curriculum and implementation strategies at the most recent National Symposium for Music Teachers Education conference (SMTE) at the University of North Carolina.
